What is Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy?
Short Version:
EMDR helps you to regain control over the way in which past experiences define (or don’t define!) your life, thus freeing you to become a more authentic and at peace version of yourself.
Longer Version:
EMDR is an empirically validated treatment for trauma-related disorders, although evidence shows that it also has dramatic impacts on addressing the impacts of “Little T” traumas and negative life experiences as well.
EMDR therapists look to address presently occurring issues in people’s lives by:
First: Building awareness of how negative past experiences are stored in our minds in terms of how they have shaped how we think and feel about ourselves and the world.
Second: Helping you to reprocess these memories into something that is more adaptive. Meaning that EMDR helps clients to both acknowledge and also push past more negative assumptions about a memory’s meaning in order to gain access to the more realistic and balanced ways of thinking about ourselves that our brains are designed to do.
Third: Reinstalling memories into our minds with these new perspectives so that they may begin to naturally and lastingly reshape a person’s thoughts, emotions, and behaviors
